PSHE Curriculum

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education at Fringford C of E Primary is a subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. Our PHSE curriculum also includes Relationships and Health Education which will become statutory in September 2020.

Intent:

  • To provide a curriculum that is broadly based and balanced and which meets the needs of all pupils.
  • To make good provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) for our children, drawing on good practice.
  • To develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team-working and critical thinking in the context of three core themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world (including economic wellbeing and aspects of careers education).

Implementation:

  • Our PSHE framework uses ‘SCARF’ resources which ensures our teaching is coherent and cohesive throughout school from Reception to Year 6.
  • Each year the Life Education Bus visit covers the following topics:
    - Friends
    - Decisions
    - Meet the Brain
    - It’s Great to be Me
    - My Wonderful Body
    - All About Me
    - Feelings
  • The whole school uses the ‘Good to be Green’ scheme which is an effective way of promoting positive behaviour, rewarding those pupils who consistently behave appropriately, and is a means of being able to track those pupils who find it harder to meet the school's expected behaviour code.
  • Our Year 5 and 6 pupils participate in Junior Citizens. During their two hour visit all children experience eight different safety scenarios and each child is given the opportunity to practice making a 999 telephone call. All learning sessions are designed to be interactive, where children are taught a variety of life skills which focus upon how to keep themselves safe whilst potentially helping others who may be in difficulty or distress.
  •  E-Safety week and Anti-bullying week are given a high profile.
  •  Fundamental British Values are linked to School Values.
  •   Regular visits from outside agencies such as police, school nurse, fire safety and NSPCC to help children to keep themselves safe.
  • First Aid Training for KS1 and KS2 pupils.
  • Our School Council provides our young people with a forum to discuss their opinions and thoughts. It allows students to have a voice that is proactive in promoting positive change within the school.
  •  Our Wellbeing Ambassadors deliver regular assemblies on how their peers can look after their mental health and wellbeing.

Impact:

  • Children will achieve their academic potential and develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future.
  • Children will to distinguish right from wrong and respect the civil and criminal law of England.
  • Children will take responsibility for their behaviour and understand how they can contribute positively to society.
